OSC HYDRO is the central 24-hour control centre for managing VERBUND hydropower in Austria and Germany. It is the central communication point for enquiries, security services and contact with authorities. Because power plants above a certain size are critical infrastructure, ensuring the supply is a key task. With the help of the control centre, we guarantee the long-term operational safety of our facilities for the general public and companies
This department at VERBUND is responsible for the construction of low-pressure facilities on rivers in Austria and Germany. In this department, we take care of existing facilities, plan new construction projects and oversee the ecological dimension of these tasks. Hydrography and surveying are also overseen here.
Typically, the proper installation of electrical engineering measures is precisely what forms the basis for the secure existence of a power plant. That is where VERBUND’s Electrical Engineering department comes in. In the department itself, both operating and strategic business are combined to maintain supplies, even in an emergency. For this purpose, we are already heavily involved in power plant planning and are developing solutions to guarantee the flow of electricity at the highest quality.
Securing our installations is a top priority. To control maintenance and revitalisation measures, it takes specialists that consider the VERBUND Group holistically. Operational Technology at VERBUND secures the infrastructure of operations and is the first authority when it comes to measures at the power plants. As an in-house service partner, we support the power plant groups during revision work and keep an eye on budget planning and network security.
The construction of a power plant involves many adjustments and tasks. In the Maintenance Coordination and Asset Management department at VERBUND, we work with the company as well as with Controlling and Law to ensure that we always design our power plants to the highest technical level and pull out all the stops to implement opportunities for optimisation in a timely manner. To this end, the department manages and coordinates VERBUND’s technical departments.
The Mechanical Engineering and Steel Hydraulic Structures department at VERBUND acts as the developer and control body, both for new construction projects and for maintenance and refurbishment projects. This is also where the risk measurement for predamaged components takes place, as well as the selection of materials and their testing. Specialist personnel work to arrange special installations, repair generator sets and correct technical failures at the in-house assembly hall in Schwarzach.
Any change to a power plant requires appropriate contracts, agreements and settlements with stakeholders and partners in the federal government, region and neighbours in the area. To maximise efficiency, the Administration and Plant Law department provides internal legal advice and coordinates with external legal advisors within VERBUND Hydropower. This prevents problems, saves costs and shortens the duration of projects.
When people think of a dam in relation to a power plant, they think of a barrier structure that impounds a river into a reservoir in a valley. Without the Dams and High-Pressure Systems department, it would not be possible to implement dams or large-scale projects in the high-pressure segment. The department ensures the legally compliant development of these projects and is responsible for their quality.
In addition to business evaluations, budgeting and planning, as well as profitability calculations and ongoing analyses, the core tasks of this department at various sites in Austria and Germany are to provide suitable management bases for the management of hydropower, coordinate with the holding company and conduct all reporting. In human resources management, an essential element is apprenticeship training for the entire VERBUND Group in the electrical engineering and metal technician professions.
